Is this your first time performing with DragonDiva?
This will be my third performance with DragonDiva. My first was playing Lord Mountararat in Iolanthe(2009) and the Sandman in Hansel and Gretel(2009).
What attracted you to Candide?
The music is gorgeous and it is smart, funny and makes you think. It is also completely ridiculous at a level on par with Monty Python. I believe Candide is really Bernstein's theatric masterpiece and can't wait to play it to an audience.
Favourite thing about the role you are playing in Candide?
The ensemble roles I will be playing are all completely different and leave a lot of room for interpretation. My favorite thing is the creation and execution of these varied characters.
Where did you find inspiration for your role?
Everywhere. Books, movies, TV shows. Though most commonly in the shower.
Favourite part of Candide?
My favorite part so far is the Auto da Fe scene in the first act. The music is challenging and the whole thing is just over the top hilarity.
What attracted you to the operatic stage?
The opera stage has actually been the last thing on my mind for the past few years. Despite having previous experience I was far more interested in recital repertoire and expanding my musical tool kit to include jazz, blues and rock. This April I was asked to perform in the Vancouver Academy of Music's production of Carlisle Floyd's Susannah. Though my part was small it reminded me just how much I love the stage and love opera and I'm happy to be back.
Would you recommend this opera to someone who has never seen one? Why?
I would. Opera in english is always easier to understand and enjoy if you are new to the genre, and since Candide fits into a grey area between opera and musical theatre it is a perfect springboard for the appreciation of other more pure forms of opera.
Favorite quote from Candide?
Candide: My beloved foster brother! But I slaughtered you!
Maximilian: Oh no you didn't. You see it was like this I... Oh, well, never mind now! Just buy me, please...
Do you have a secret talent other than singing?
Imagining the size of the universe. Hurts my brain though.
Favorite non-classical music?
I love the blues. Freddie King is definitely my favorite.
Thomas may be the youngest member of our cast, but he comes with big talent. Come see and hear this talented young man in many many roles in Candide! Details on our "upcoming" page.
